Issues raised at the last Meeting of Ampthill’s Community Safety Forum
Wednesday, 28 May 2008 - Parkside Hall, Ampthill
Review of Progress against priorities agreed at the last Forum
Criminal Damage
An arrest has been made of a person suspected of causing criminal damage in the Park Street/Park Hill area. The person has been released on Police bail and while this is an ongoing investigation, no further damage has been caused since the arrest.
In response to the complaints of young people causing problems in Willow Way the Police have targeted the area in an attempt at identifying the main ringleaders. Those identified as being responsible for anti social behaviour have had a visit at their home addresses where they were spoken to with their parents over their behaviour. Three ‘Section 59 orders’ that allow for the potential seizing of vehicles used in an anti social manner have been issued to young people on off road motorbikes and mini motos and another has been warned with his parents present about his use of a scooter. No further offences of criminal damage have been recorded in Willow Way since early February.
In order to avoid a repeat of these incidents Mid Beds District Council is looking into possibly selling parcels of land that have become trouble areas around Willow Way
Arrests have been made in respect of criminal damage in Clophill
Parking
The problem solving group have received a presentation from Waverley Developments concerning a proposed development off Church Street, that would include a provision of long term parking
County Hall officials will be looking into the provision of yellow lines in the Park Hill area.
Mid Beds District Council have allocated funding for an extra ‘half’ parking enforcement officer.
The possibility of residents parking permits is been explored.
The issue of parking signage is been looked at, as well as other potential sites for car parks.
Liaison is on going with the new manager of Waitrose over the signage in the car parking, making it clear that the car park is open to all and not just to Waitrose shoppers.
Speeding
More local officers have been trained to use the Police’s speed detection equipment and deployment has taken place in both Ampthill and the surrounding villages. During March and April 43 motorists have been checked and two people warned for exceeding the 20 miles an hour zone in Ampthill Town Centre. A further two people have been spoken to during checks in Maulden and Clophill.
Some residents have criticised the Police for focussing on speeding in the area with one accusing the officer for ‘wasting his time’.
Updates on other recent activity from Community Safety Partners
Litter – Mid Beds District Council are dealing with, by a mixture of education and enforcement through fixed penalties that can be issued by PCSO’s. The public are reminded to report any littering to the Council’s Customer Service Team on 08452 304040
Young People – a survey of young people has begun, along with direct engagement with young people in the town. The issues identified thus far are the need for things to do that are affordable, the need for a youth shelter and somewhere to meet. More feedback will be given at the next Forum.
Community Engagement – PCSO’s had carried out consultation with at least 100 people that had not been able to attend the previous meeting and their issues had mirrored the ones raised at the first meeting, although the issue of the state of the roads had been raised.
CCTV in Ampthill – it was reported by the Town Council that CCTV will hopefully be in operation by August in the Town, with 3 cameras in the town centre, one in the Park & another in the ‘Zig Zags’ by the Bowls Club
Fresh Issues Raised:
Station Road by the Schools – the possible imposition of a 20mph speed limit
Speeding issues around emergency service vehicles & buses along Dunstable Street
Issues over speeding in Bedford Street, particularly in relation to the junction with Swaffield Close
Would traffic calming measures be a solution to speeding in Ampthill Town centre?
Could local volunteers be trained in the use of speed cameras?
Millbrook residents had raised concerns over heavy vehicles illegally coming through the community in contradiction to signage that states that limits apply. The same issues apply to Ampthill.
The need for parking enforcement officers on a full time basis to actively tackle Ampthill’s Parking problems
Dog Mess particularly along Dunstable Street
Danger of more accidents occurring by the mobile home park on the bypass, with a plea that the speed limit is dropped 40mph as you approach the A6 roundabout
Parking on pavements, particularly up Bedford Street, with one vehicle seemingly been used on the pavement for advertising purposes!
The top three priorities for the Forum were agreed as:
Parking - Continued focus on the problem solving group that is already looking at the problems in and around Ampthill. A specific request was made that Parking Enforcement be made a priority and that Ampthill be given a full time officer, possibly shared with Flitwick as in the past
Speeding - Continued focus on the work already underway but also paying particular reference to the locations and wider issues discussed at the forum including bypass speeding issues up to the A6 roundabout
Criminal Damage - Continued work around reducing vandalism and other criminal damage in Ampthill, Clophill, Maulden and Millbrook
