GRADWELL IS THE BEST!!!
Many of you know that next season will see our 1st XI Scorer John Bunker achieve the remarkable feat of having scored for the Club for 50 years.
As you can imagine in that time John has seen many players pull on the Lion of Ampthill Town CC, at the End of Season Dinner John was asked the question who is the best cricketer to play for Ampthill?
John's answered straight away, "Mark Gradwell", this is truly a great honour for our overseas player of 2000 & 2001 to be rated the best by our man of facts & figures.
On the subject of Mark, great news he is to marry Louise on Saturday 29th March 2003 in Bloemfontein. Congratulations to them both, they are always welcome back in Ampthill
David
Cheeseman
I came across this photo of a cricket club legend at work ,when Ivan Smith a work colleague brought in some of his old Rugby Club snaps.
Some of you will not remember "Cheese" who died in 1991.
He was a larger than life character who lived life to the full. Peter Sayer our President tells me that this is a rare photo of a young Dave as he actually has the ball.
Also in the picture is Ivan Smith & Vic Kaye (now Rugby Club Steward)
I remember the local Chemist Shop owner as a good friend, he was in my view the finest appealer for an LBW I have ever seen.

TO ALL MEMBERS & SPONSORS
AUTOTEXTLIST Dear Members,
MARCH NEWSLETTER
Congratulations to our “A” team Indoors for finishing runners up to Flitwick in Division One. Their only defeat was against the team from The Vale & only lost the League on run rate. All our other sides have had enjoyable campaigns
Mike and I returned from our holiday to South Africa last Thursday. We had a wonderful time in Cape Town and then with Mark & Louise Gradwell in Pretoria.
They both ask to be remembered to you all
The films have been sent off so there will be lots of photos and lots of great tales to tell. Including a poor horse that had to carry the Vice for half an hour! (never again)
Nets
The Club’s senior nets & practice has started on Monday nights at 8 pm, at Marston Vale Middle School sports hall in Stewartby (these continue till Monday 10th April). I’m told that there was a good turn out for the first practice. It is important that you support our captains by attending these practices and by preparing yourself for the campaign ahead.
Youth Registration
This important section of our club will be registering their Under 10, 12, 14 and 16 squads at the pavilion on Thursday 20th April starting at 7.30 pm. If you require further details please contact Graeme Presswell on 01462 731011 or at bedford@howorthshoes.co.uk
Our traditional start to the Ampthill cricket season is at the pavilion on Friday 21st April at 7.30 pm. I’m your contact with the tickets for this most social of evenings.
The cost of this seat down meal is £16 a head. Please contact me on (01525) 841836 or on smithy@theoldsun.fsnet.co.uk to secure your tickets.
Our annual Celebrity Sportsman Dinner is once again at Parkside Hall on Friday 19th May
The theme of the evening is the “Hard men of Football” & we have two such men to address us on the subject, Tommy Smith & Ron “Chopper” Harris. Should be interesting!
Please contact Chris Degnan on 07720550298 or cdegnan@pentland.com to book your tickets for our major fund-raiser. The cost once again is £28 a ticket
The Club has been asked to host for the first time the full county side. Beds CCC will play Lincolnshire CCC on Sunday 14th May in a one-day game starting at 11am. The Club’s committee is keen for us to make a success of this day. To this end we will be asking Club members to make themselves available to help out on the day.
Lets hope that our own Will Sneath will be fit to play for the County after recently breaking his arm snow boarding!
As you know we shall be hoping that England can progress in Football World Cup in Germany in the summer. There are 32 teams in Germany and all will be available in our sweepstake. To take part please send me £5 to 6 Sidney Road in Ampthill to pay for a team.
Prizes of £60 to the winner, £30 to the runner-up & £15 to the two losing semi-finalists.
The draw for teams will take place just before the start of the competition.

First Aid Course
The Mid Beds Youth Cricket Cluster has organized a first aid course aimed at the needs of cricket. The training on Saturday 1st April will take place at our Pavilion between 9am and 3pm. The day with lunch is free, but is limited to the first twelve to apply, if you fancy increasing your knowledge then give me a ring on 01525 841836
Congratulations to Claude & Sheila Everitt
I hope during the season that our batsmen have many fine partnerships, but none will be better than Claude & Sheila, whom this month will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations from us all.
With the season round the corner can I for a change remind you that once again this summer the umpire will always be right.
Yours In Cricket
