Sponsored by Country Properties & Ampthill Town Council
Ampthill Festival 2001 ran all through the month of June. Events kicked off with a very successful Race Night at Ampthill Football Club on June 1st. This was followed by the Festival Pop Quiz on 8th June, again at the Football Club, with 13 teams participating (the result: 1st Page 5 - from Welwyn Garden City, 2nd Music Masters - from Bedford, 3rd Mark, Keith & David have got no Mates - from Ampthill, 4th Eight Goal Thriller - from Wootton). Next day saw the crowning of the Festival Queen and Princesses at Ampthill Hall. The very successful and difficult Festival General Knowledge Quiz took place at Ampthill Rugby Club on June 22nd, with 19 teams participating, with the Rainbow Warriors running out the eventual winners. Gala Day took place on Sunday, June 24th with near perfect weather conditions (sunny and hot) - see below for in depth details. The festival was rounded off by the Festival Dance at Parkside Hall, which was attended by 190.
Ampthill Gala Day took place on Sunday June 24th and attracted huge crowds in near perfect weather conditions. Events kicked off in Station Road at 1 p.m. with the procession of floats setting out on their trek around the streets of Ampthill. The Ladybird Playgroup was again judged the best float, as this years theme had been 'Myth's & Legends'. The Wingfield Clubs float was judged to be the best Pub Float. In all 10 floats were entered with the procession been lead by a samba band. Once they arrived at the town square they were joined by Rebornstoke Morris Men & Bedfordshire Lace, who had been entertaining the crowds since 1 p.m. The procession arrived in Ampthill Park at 2.20 p.m., where Town Mayor John Mayor declared Gala Day open. The vast crowds were entertained by the Medieval Combat Society and a number of Music acts throughout the afternoon. All in All, the 2001 Festival was probably the biggest and best ever, so why not become a part of shaping next years festivities.
