4)
Peter Sayer and Jennie Sayer have been actively involved with:-
Ampthill Town Cricket Club
for
about 30 years having moved into Ampthill in 1969. Peter visited the Engine and
Tender PH with his good friend and neighbour, Jack Springford in 1970 and was
immediately accepted into the Engine and Tender Fine Arts Appreciation and
Debating Society with Publican Harry Skinner in the chair, and within one week
was playing with the Ampthill Town Cricket Club’s 2nd XI under the astute
leadership of such luminaries as Claude Everitt and Martyn Cann. It wasn’t
long after that he attended the Club’s AGM at The Wingfield Club and came away
as the Club Secretary. Since then spells as 2nd XI and 3rd XI Captain and also
Chairman and Fixture Secretary have culminated with the honour of being elected
President to follow in the footsteps of Richard Dillingham MBE, a hard act to
follow.
Jennie
did not start helping with the teas at once (it took several weeks before she
became involved) but once involved was made very welcome by Club stalwarts,
Sheila, Sylvia and Joan, and found herself doing 2nd XI teas for many years with
the highlight being the season in which we first had electricity installed in
the Pavilion and during which we enjoyed amongst other fine delicacies "moules
a la mariniere" and other “foreign muck” and she also introduced cream teas and
even ice cream, now very much a part of Ampthill Town Cricket Club’s famous
teas. The 3rd XI french bread with cheese and pate teas at Redborne School
alongside the pigs and other animals were also her idea which are still talked
about with relish by the Saturday 3rd’s stalwarts.
We
are delighted to be the sponsor of the Club’s excellent website assembled by
Mark Smith, brother of Ian Smith, and a great friend to the Club, and hope that
you find of lot of interesting and up to the minute information about the
Club’s activities, and we ask that you recommend it to all your Ampthill
friends.
